Do Violent Game Lead to Real Violence?

Here's a quick introduction about how violent game is like. Violent type of games usually consists of controversial material such as graphic violence, sexual themes, drug use, nudity, profanity, criminal behaviour or other provocative and offensive content. Violent game have also been studied for links to addiction and violent behaviour(aggressiveness) but some disagree to these studies.
Some examples of violent games are Grand Theft Auto, God of War, Doom, Mortal Kombat and etc.. Here are a few links to view the 'Top 10 most violent games':

Studies on Violent Games
There has been alot of studies involved to test whether violent games can make someone more agressive. However, there are several common conclusions from all the studies such as:
  • Children who play violent games experience an increase in physiological signs of agression. This means that when young people are playing violent video games, their blood pressure and heart rate increases as though they are in an actual, physical fight. There is a study showing that there is a difference in physical arousal between a bloody version of Mortal Kombat and a version with blood turned off.
  • Children who play violent games experience an increase in aggressive actions. In 2000, there's a study in which half of the students played a violent video games and half played non-violent video games. After playing the game, they will be given a simple reaction test that put two of the students to a head-to-head competition. Whoever win the test got to punish the loser with an audio blast. Studies shown that student who played violent video games tend to delivered longer and louder audio blasts to their opponents.

In 2006 at Indiana University School of Medicine conducted a research. In this research, 22 students played "Need for Speed: Underground" a racing game which does not contain any violent components. Another 22 students played "Medal of Honor: Frontline" a first-person shooting game which consists of violent component. Researchers immediately scanned the 44 students after they played video games. Evidence shows that the brain scan of the student who played violent video games showed increased activity in amygdala, which stimulates emotions, and decreased activity in prefrontal lobe, which regulates inhibition, self-control and concentration. No activity changes were shown in the brain scan of student who played "Need for Speed".

There are also some incident which happen due to violent game. This is summarisation of several incidents that happened in the past.

  • In April 1999, 2 students, Eric Harris, aged 18 and Dylan Klebold, aged 17 killed 12 students and a teacher in Columbine High School Massacre. Both of them were allegedly obsessed with the video game, Doom and before the shootings, Harris claimed that the massacre would be "like Doom". More information about this incident can be found at acolumbinesite
  • In June 2003, 18 year old Devin Moore was arrested in Alabama on suspicion of car theft. The police officers brought him to the station and started booking him without any trouble. Minutes later, Devin attacked one of the officer, stole his gun, shot him and another officer and fled down the hall and shot a 911 dispatcher in the head. He then grabbed a set of keys, got in a police car and drove away. After he was captured, he said "Life is a video game. Everybody's got to die sometime." He said that he was addicted to Grand Theft Auto.

In conclusion, I feel that it doesn't even matter how long and what type of game you play regardless of violence or non-violence as long you don't get too aggressive or involve in violent activities. 1. Some useful findings from your research. Yo should cite your sources or link to the sites where you read the info.

It's interesting to note that how bloody a gan=me is can determine physical reactions, even if it's cyber blood.

Given what you have said in your post, then your ending seems strange - should you not then, be supporting the non-playing of violent games?

  2. i agree with khairul, it's doesn't really matters if the games is violent or not, because at the end it's the person(their mind set) that causes such cases to happen.

  3. cases as in, leading to killing(in real world) or whatever. it's just the person thinking.

  4. Ya I agree with alan. I played violent game before such as resident evil 1,2,3 , grand theft auto and I am still living normal. It depends on how one have perception on it.

Playing games allow the mind to have the creativity to solve the and pass the rounds in the game.

    Cheers

  5. Despite not having experienced the true gruesomeness and gore of violent games, I still had my fair share of blood-filled in-game scenes and massacres. These images often filled me with disgust, however, it does more harm psychologically than what's imaginable.

I feel that gaming violence had significantly changed to world to what it is today. Some youths see life as something that can be restarted. Certain games caused severe addiction, resulting in players becoming too deeply involved in gameplay that they cannot differentiate between real-life and the virtual world. This has very serious consequences that has become rather prevalent.

I agree with Jack with regards to games stimulating creativity. It is true that the brains are put to work even when playing games, thats why playing games as a form of relaxation isn't very correct afterall.

I still feel that gaming should be done in moderation, and when faced with violent games, it is best that such exposures are reduced to the minimum.

  6. This is why there are ratings for games. This is to prevent minors from gaining access to restricted content.

However, with the internet, I wonder how effective this is.

  7. Yes, i agree with Ze Chuan. The internet now has a rampant piracy issue where users are able to gain access to games of almost any genre. So violent games are easily obtainable.
Yet, the ratings are only ratings, so I guess there should be a regulation in place so that the efforts of rating the games can achieve a better result.

I feel that the person to be blamed for this is the producers of the games. Yes, I do agree that scenes like might attract more customers and enhance gameplay with realistic looking bloody or death scenes. However, what good would it bring to us when we are watching it? Worse, children might find it fun and might even try out some of the scenes in the game.

Since even the game ratings are not hindering access to these games to children, only the government can help by banning such games. Yes, it is a cruel and harsh fact for game lovers like us. But it would be more cruel to let children play these games and later take the lives of others when they got addicted.

  9. There are cases, where people got to violent. If I remember correctly, one person who play GTA, killed a black, because he was a black. Or something like that. That person killed someone because of some racial issues.

  11. Most of the people who are playing violent games will tend to be more violent. Some will show it obviously while some not that obvious without they themselves realising it. There is a saying like if you are with good friend you will be good you are with bad friend most likely you will be bad too. It is due to influence. But I not referring to everyone if not I will get flamed.

  12. I think violent game lead to real violence. We must know a game as "GTA", it is a game about killing people and violence. In the game, you can kill anyone on the street. Altough, it is just a game, however, some teenagers may get effected by the game. And killing somebody in real life.

  13. I think that playing violent game maybe not always lead to violence. The main important thing that most gamers like to play violent games if there is no violence, most people rather dont play it. Most of this gamers just like to play violent game but they would not be led to real violence.

I agree with Jieshun. Violence in games attracts much more potential buyers. A game without violence will only attract the young. What are the factors that would attract adults in buying games?. It is surely good graphics, excellent gameplay and realistic sounds and images. Thse images might include gory or blood filled scenes.

In all I feel that it is all up to the individual to control himself when playing these games. I feel that we can play any games we like as long as we can control our emotions during game and not get too addicted to it.

  15. Your post has given me new insights into the violent world of online gaming and its impacts on people especially the youths.

However, I do not agree with you that the time you spent playing violent games and the degree of violence of the game does not affect the player. Based on your post and the facts that you have given and the incidents you summarised, they all point to the fact that addiction to online gaming, excessive time spent on online gaming and high levels of violence in games lead players to violent behaviour. But you contradicted yourself in your summary. I'm not entirely sure whether you are pointing out the negative effects of online gaming or supporting the fact that online gaming does not lead to real life violence. Maybe you should clear that up.

Having said that, I personally think that gaming violence could translate into real life. Humans are not naturally violent beings. It is quite possible that people with high tendencies of violence has learn it somewhere, hence the saying "Monkey see, monkey do". But not all players are easily susceptible to violence in real life after playing violent games, as point out by Jieshun and Weixi. This could probably be because each of our brains functions differently. Some people are easily influenced by violence, while others are able to process it and suppress the violence.

  16. What alan said is true. Gaming depends on someone mind set. For certain people, after playing violent games for too long, they cant differentiate the difference between the virtual world and the real world.

I agree with Ze Chuan that there are ratings for games but as what Jensen have said, rating doesnt even matter nowadays. As long there you have a computer and an internet, you can download most of the games online.

  17. Games should be categorized into different age groups. Sometimes teenagers or even young kids get so engross in their games, they become violent. Parents should keep a closer watch on their kids as these games can be easily accessed.

  18. I think there was a case in Singapore where a guy got addicted to video gaming and would turned violent if his mum tried to stop him, not sure if he was playing a violent game though.

Generally, I do believe that playing violent games would lead to increased violence. But, I also think that it's also up to the individual and the ability to separate the virtual from the reality.

Good information on topic. At least, guns are banned in Singapore. It's quite scary come to think of it whereby those people would get carried away taking their violent gaming actions to the streets. Should'nt fantasize violence too much. Peace. No Violence.
